The metaphorical algorithm of Unkyeong Haingsook Kim’s God’s Fragment II dismantles the systems of meaning and language, operating as a device that reveals a world prior to their formation. This is intertwined with the structural principle that runs throughout the entire collection. The recurring correspondence between the micro and the macro?embers and world, soil and earth, mountain range and sprout?suggests traces of an invisible order.
These poems are not merely shortened in length; they reduce the scale of the world itself. Possessing a density that can no longer be extended, they open outward from their compressed interior. If short poetic forms across traditions?ancient epigrams, classical East Asian verse, Japanese haiku, and modern fragmentary poetry?have existed for memory, for emptiness, for the moment, or for the fragment, the poems in this collection allow metaphor itself to function as a world, as a cosmos.
Kim’s poetry tells us: meaning does not fail to exist; it simply does not reach completion. God’s Fragment II reveals an unseen world, a world that exists only as structure. It is not merely a collection of poems, but a system. Through this work, we come to realize that the meanings of things and of the world have not disappeared?they have simply not yet arrived.
